My Dog Comet

Comet is and has been the best dog that I have ever had.

This 10 year old white lab and I have a special 'connection'.    I can 'think' about him and he will come to me from wherever he happens to be at the moment.

When he was younger, our family could be eating at the dinner table and without ever looking at him, I could say the words "Comet, roll over" and from in the other room, Comet would get up and rool over.

He loves to play 'tug-a-war' with his play toy and seems to understand english.

A few weeks ago we noticed that Comet was getting very skinny.   Since I already have a daughter that has diabeties, I was suspicious that maybe Comet had contracted that disease also, so I took him to the vet.

Sure enough, he has diabetes... his blood sugar level was over 400.

So I have been giving Comet twice daily injections of insulin (Humanlin) when I feed him.

But his body apparently rejects the insulin as he is still skinny and now I can see signs that he is loosing his sight.

The other day, I took some of the older meat that we had in the refrigerator to give to him and as I usually do, I threw it up so that he could 'catch' it... This is something that we have done all his life.  He never misses.

That day he missed... and the meat landed sqaure on his face, then bounced off onto the ground.     Comet looked around for it and couldn't see that it had landed just next to his feet.     This was clue #1.

Yesterday, I was visiting with my Grandchildren here at the house and as I looked outside the window, I noticed that Comet was walking around the yard.  This is a normal thing for him to do.

However, he walked right into one of the trees in the backyard.

This is breaking my heart.

I know that the time is drawing near that we are going to have to put him down, but I am having a very hard time with it.

I'm calling the vet today to see what else can be done.
